THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Flying Pig Cafe Restaurant Review:
Chef/owner Joe Kim, whose Flying Pig food truck is among the city's favorites, operates this brick-and-mortar companion, the Flying Pig Café, in Little Tokyo. The eatery features many of the truck's signature dishes (pork belly on steamed bun with cucumber, red onion and "death sauce" and peanut butter carnitas), but the greatly expanded menu also offers duck confit mac ‘n’ cheese, spaghetti with uni, and even a hearty steak with a balsamic reduction. You can finish with a ginger crème brûlée or cucumber sorbet. Serving four to six people (ordered in advance) is a whole pork butt with shrimp and mango salsa. The edgy dining room, with a neon-framed impressionistic mural of the L.A. skyline (that includes a pig flying over a rainbow) and lighting fixtures that resemble colorful clouds, is a step up from the curbside scene of the truck. A small wine list is offered, plus saké and craft beers.
