An institution in its own right, this West Village bistro caters to professors and students from the nearby New School and New York University, as well as the loyal neighborhood locals. In warmer weather, the sidewalk café welcomes lingering on the comfortable yellow-and-green bistro chairs, and in the winter it’s warm and cozy inside, with floor to ceiling windows offering ample people-watching opportunities. French Roast has great coffee and, along with good burgers and omelets, does such bistro specialties as steak au poivre (with first-rate french fries) and roasted chicken.
