THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Geranium Restaurant Review:
Filling the gap for a mid-level vegetarian restaurant with comfort food and a stylish atmosphere is Bernal Heights' Geranium. The narrow space used to house a butcher shop. But it has now been transformed into a bustling restaurant with clean lines, celadon green walls, dark wood banquettes and attractive lighting. Indulge in sparkling, seasonal produce in salads like the mix of Romano and green beans drizzled with an almond and Champagne vinaigrette or the crisp Caesar whose tanginess belies the obvious fact that it is missing the anchovies. A bean-centric chili is offered alone at lunch and dinner or as a foundation for huevos rancheros at brunch. Loosely built lasagna offers delicious layers of spinach and ricotta along with a strangely paired sherry sauce. The eatloaf, densely packed with lentils and nuts, arrives with an au jus-style sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. Desserts include a vegan chocolate cake, seasonal pies and granitas, and a rich cheesecake. Despite the owner having spent time in the dining rooms of Fleur de Lys and Boulevard, the service lacks finesse but is still well-intentioned and friendly.
