American comfort food with a few detours around the globe at this SoHo spot.
Houseman Restaurant Review:
Situated in west SoHo, this American eatery with global influences is worth the trek to the somewhat desolate neighborhood. Be prepared to ask your server questions. The menu, which changes regularly, is confusing. Some of the dishes just list the ingredients. You might come to find out that four elements are actually a soup or perhaps something sautéed, but you’d never know until you inquire. Whatever you order, it’s bound to be fairly satisfying. The double-patty burger is a riot of ground beef. Roast chicken, wading in a pool of roast fava beans, is the culinary equivalent of a lit fireplace and a visit from an old friend (bottle of Scotch in hand) on a cool night. Desserts should not be skipped: the malt ice cream in brown butter and the peanut tart are showstoppers. The wine list can be a steal with some very affordable (and good) bottles on offer for much less than you’d expect.
