Lafayette is fueled by the passion of its owner, Montmartre native Edmond Sarfati. Sarfati is a traditional French chef with an eternal twinkle in his eye and a mustache big enough to paint a room. He’s also a talented chef. His restaurant is a big, dimly lit establishment that recalls the glory days of Gallic dining in the Southland. Old chestnuts such as escargots, pâté maison, braised veal and pepper steak jump right off the menu, but the raison d’être here remains Sarfati’s specials, such as navarin of lamb, confit of goose and classic beef à la bourguignon, farmhouse dishes that Sarfati keeps around for die-hard French gastronomes.
