Most Angeleno foodies are familiar with Indian food---Northern Indian that is. Madhu’s Dasaprakash, which specializes in Southern Indian cuisine, is a whole other---and equally wonderful---ball game. Although menu items are all meatless, expect intensely flavored, nuanced and altogether delicious dishes. Don’t miss the masala dosai, a crisp, big crêpe (and we mean big!) filled with a spicy mixture of potatoes and onions. We also like the savory fritters and rice cakes. Pakodas, for example, are golden, deep-fried lentil fritters accented with either cashew nuts or onions. Conjeevaram iddly are dense, steamed rice cakes intriguingly, though not too intensely, spiced. Southern-Indian rookies may want to choose among a half-dozen well-priced introductory combinations.
