The most famous Italian restaurant in Oahu, Matteo’s has a huge, loyal following. We’re talking old-fashioned southern Italian here---dimly lit, with comfortable, oversize leather booths. Matteo’s boasts that semi-ornate elegance peculiar to Italian eateries of this type. The menu is just what you’d expect it to be, with dishes like stuffed mushrooms, classic antipasto, calamari fra diavolo, saltimbocca, chicken cacciatore and eggplant Parmigiana. The seafood dishes are pretty good, especially if you stick to fish from local waters, or the cioppino. The seafood lasagna is our favorite, and the Caesar salad is the classic preparation. The kitchen can be unreliable, but when it’s on, it’s very good. The wine list is extensive and well-chosen, with real depth in the Italian offerings.
