Abuelitas Restaurant Review:
Hidden in rustic Topanga Canyon and loaded with character is this local hangout, complete with a charming tree-shaded patio overlooking Topanga Creek (an ideal spot for communing with nature while consuming margaritas). The interior boasts pumpkin-hued walls with Southwestern oil paintings, colorful Mexican ceramics and a large stone fireplace. Translated to 'grandma' in Spanish, the restaurant's name explains its comforting cuisine. After starting with a variety of classics like a trio of tasty empanadas, flautas or a spicy pinto bean dip with bacon, diners are faced with an extensive menu of familiar border favorites, as well as some interesting Mexico City home-style specialties. Consider, for instance, crab and mushroom enchiladas topped with creamy chipotle sauce, or prawns slowly cooked in a spicy black pepper sauce. Homemade flan with a caramel sauce makes a nice finish.
