Whatever James and Jeanie Roland’s reasons were for putting down roots in this rustic seaside town, The Perfect Caper is about the most gastronomically ambitious restaurant between Sarasota and Naples. Jeanie is in the kitchen, with a discernible passion for sourcing topnotch meats and produce. Her menu contains some reliable staples (jumbo prawns wrapped in shredded phyllo, fried crisp and served with avocado relish and blood orange vinaigrette), but always aims to capture the best of the season, whether with Gulf seafood and game (grilled venison tenderloin with roasted purple Peruvian potatoes, berry-fig glace and haricots verts) or with tropical fruits from the nearby Fort Myers area. James is the warm presence in the dining room, which has a comfy speakeasy charm and low lighting. Regulars keep the place hopping, with late hours and live music on the weekends. If entrée prices are too steep, happy hour deals and a nibble in the lounge is the way to go.
