THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Prima Ristorante Restaurant Review:
Since its 1977 debut as a wine-and-cheese shop that served informal meals, Prima has been an East Bay favorite. It still has a wine shop at the back of one dining room, from which diners can choose a wine right off the shelf for a modest corkage fee; there are weekly wine tastings, and all wines served by the glass are available for tastes. Prima's co-owner Peter Chastain is also its executive chef; fellow co-owner John Rittmaster is its wine director. Dishes have included agnolotti filled with braised oxtails served in a Parmesan broth, local halibut, grilled ahi and braised baby chicken, and such desserts as pistachio millefeuille --- puff pastry layered with toasted pistachio cream. A jazz pianist plays Wednesday through Saturday evenings.
