For those on the Peninsula who don't want to drive to San Francisco and Chinatown for dim sum, Chinese-family-owned Tai Pan offers the real thing in Palo Alto. The fixtures, fill-in-yourself menu and deliver-as-ready service is as true to dim sum as any notable spot on San Francisco's Grant Avenue. Sixty-three choices from dumplings and pot stickers to fried and steamed dishes create a challenging set of decisions. Our favorites include the Peking duck with bun and the classic barbecued pork bun, available baked or steamed. Desserts are in the dim sum style --- steamed custard buns and sesame seed balls being traditional examples.
