Tarallucci e Vino Restaurant Review:
Tarallucci e Vino is a tri-colored Italian chameleon. In the morning, caffeine-hungry cognoscenti hang out at the bar, sipping tiny cups of espresso while nibbling on a flaky “cornetto.” At lunch, the panini grill is fired up for the usual assortment of cheese and meat sandwiches. In the evening, this Union Square venue becomes a wine bar and the menu expands to pastas and meat dishes, many of which are well-executed, given the casual surroundings: sage fritters filled with mozzarella and anchovies come together in a delightful harmony; spelt tagliatelle with broccoli rabe, shiitake mushrooms and stracciatella of mozzarella is hearty; and filet mignon wrapped in speck, with asparagus purée and sun-dried tomato butter bursts with rich flavor. The wine list is relatively brief---there are 60 bottles to choose from and 20 wines available by the glass---but they’re all well selected from Italy, France and the U.S.
