The Sacramento area offers plenty of fine restaurants, but there’s only one that’s absolutely irreplaceable: Merlino’s Freeze. The burgers and hot dogs are all forgettable, but it just might be impossible to live through a Sacramento summer without a Merlino’s orange freeze. A Merlino’s freeze is hard to describe if you’ve never had one. Start with fresh-squeezed orange juice, add a little water and a little sugar, stir and freeze. To say it’s like a Slurpee is to say an icy mountain stream is like a glass of lukewarm water. Try one the next time it’s 105 in the shade, and you’ll know exactly what we mean.
