THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mucho Ultima Mexicana Restaurant Review:
It could be argued that Manhattan Beach’s culinary scene was brought to the forefront by restaurateur Michael Zislis, who is also behind The Strand House and multiple ROCK’N FISH locations, as well as this upscale Mexican eatery. Within blocks of his other ventures, the high-ceilinged, rectangular dining room is illuminated by sensual reds and amber hues. Large garage door-style windows welcome in the beachside air, mingled with the aromas from the kitchen. Though there are familiar dishes like fajitas and burritos made with filet mignon and Jidori chicken, more exciting plates exist on the “de la casa” portion of the menu. After trying the queso fundido, it’s worth moving on to the spicy drunken chicken, aptly named as it is seared and braised in a sauce of citrus and tequila. Tortillas are homemade, with a choice of flour or corn. For dessert, crispy made-to-order churros are accented with just enough cinnamon and aren’t overly sweet. The wine selection is limited, as the lengthy list of tequilas is the real focus.
