THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Pischke?s Blue Ribbon Restaurant Review:
Diners come here for two reasons. First, in honor of the late founder Chris Pischke, who built such a reputation for the landmark tropical grill over 20 years that there might as well be a statue of him erected in front (epithet: “no sniveling”). Second, because the current owner is chef Robert McGrath. The problem is, though, the only thing that remains of Pischke’s these days is the name, and McGrath has yet to hit his stride with an appetizing-reading but often flat-tasting menu of fancified American comfort foods. How to go wrong with pot roast, potpie, oyster pan roast, and slow cooked beef short ribs in Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce? When it’s good, it’s topnotch (like when McGrath himself is manning the kitchen). But on the too-frequent off-days, it can be dull.
