Michael Holmes has cooked at many of the bastions of fine dining around town. So when he finally went out on his own, St. Louis was a little surprised that he chose a small storefront that sold carry-out food and some wine and had a handful of tables and benches for on-premises consumption. As for the food, it’s upgraded home-cooking, with interesting sandwiches, pasta salads, a killer eggplant rolatini and easy-eating meatloaf that have drawn a lot of regular customers. Its backyard has evolved from patio to covered patio to all-season dining, showing how much customers like the spot. Alas, breakfast has been dropped. Fun and easy-going, there’s something for everyone at The Pitted Olive.
