THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Poons & Co Restaurant Review:
Poons remains a simple eating house, its four tiny rooms plainly furnished and decorated, serving excellent food. It also remains a remarkable value for a quick lunch or dinner. Poons wind-dried duck, Chinese sausages and bacon were brought to London in the restaurants early days and are still among the citys best. Another innovation was original hot-pots with chicken and Chinese mushrooms, minced beef and egg, or sparerib in black-bean sauce which arrive at table in a steel pot. One on its own makes a meal for two, perhaps with soup on the side. Stick to authentic Cantonese dishes and eschew crispy duck or the starters so common elsewhere. Single dish meals include a wide variety of noodles in soup or braised, and plates of rice with meat or fish. Dont expect lobsters but enjoy crab with spring onion and ginger or with chili and black bean sauce. Service is friendly and helpful. Set menus £15-£17.50.
