Schmidt's Restaurant und Sausage Haus Restaurant Review:
Located in an historic brick livery stable in German Village, Schmidt’s Restaurant und Sausage Haus has been offering German and American cuisine crafted by five generations of the Schmidt family since 1886. While dining, take in the old-world ambience: wood floors, original brick walls and a waitstaff that dons German attire. A word to the wise: go hungry and be prepared to leave stuffed. Many of Schmidt’s recipes have been developed by the family over the past century and include the Bahama Mamma, not very German sounding but very German tasting. The famous beef and pork hickory-smoked sausage is spiced with the restaurant’s secret seasoning. Paired with German potato salad and homemade chunky applesauce, it will have you grinning with delight. Also on the menu are traditional German spreads like chicken spätzle, knockwurst and wiener schnitzel, all of which go down smoothly with the local microbrews on draft. Our favorite part comes at meal’s end; the jumbo cream puff, available in vanilla or chocolate varieties, is a whopping half pound of special whipped filling in a lightly-baked pastry shell.
