Stella Alpina Osteria Restaurant Review:
True to its name, Stella Alpina Osteria ("alpine star") serves the kind of food one can easily imagine savoring in the snowy Alps. Though the décor is more modern California than it is quaint lodge, its canvas of rich woods and glass exudes the warm and cheery ambience associated with the latter. An outdoor area, warmed by heat lamps and tastefully camouflaged from the street by shrubbery, is a feasible option even in the colder months. Chef Matteo Ferrari, who hails from the Piedmont region of Italy, honors his roots and training with a rustic Italian menu that brings much gusto to its large selection of homey dishes. Rich and luscious potato bisque drizzled with truffle oil is downright intoxicating. Risotto with plump, grilled shrimp is smooth, creamy and freshened with flecks of Meyer lemon. Folks in the know order the house-made truffle gnocchi, a secret menu item (just ask) that the restaurant affectionately calls its “pillows of love." Hearty osso buco offers bold flavor and is meltingly tender. Berries soaked in port and spooned over gelato provide a boozy ending. The wine list focuses on winemakers from California and Italy.
