THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tackle Box Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant & décor: This narrow, industrial-like spot dots a corner of SOCO, the Costa Mesa shopping center that doubles as an arbiter of OC culinary hipness. Half of its elongated countertop overlooks a generous line of beer taps ready to dispense rotating craft product, giving the space a laid-back vibe ideal for a post-retail soiree.
Likes: Eclectic beer list – something for every taste.
Dislikes: No dessert.
Food & Drinks: Chef/owner and "Top Chef" alumnus Brian Huskey creates a menu of “honest food” that plays into this unfussy ambience, but takes great care in ensuring the contemporary bites are deceptively intriguing. The pinpoint flavors of starters and share plates like pickle-brined chicken wings and clam chowder-topped tater tots push them beyond their simple appearance. Burgers and sandwiches represent the mains, but they’re equally elevated. We recommend the “Cali” cheesesteak, a two-handed sandwich stuffed with rib-eye, crispy onion and jalapeño white American cheese. On weekends, brunch items like chilaquiles and avocado toast provide proper shopping fuel. A sister, lunch-only eatery can be found at 3029 Ocean Blvd., Corona Del Mar (949-723-0502).
