THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tokyo Table Restaurant & Bar Restaurant Review:
At Tokyo Table, a contemporary approach is applied to various Japanese culinary techniques---sashimi, yakitori, nabe, tempura---but at prices considerably lower than at its Restaurant Row neighbor, Matsuhisa. With the conspicuous absence of a sushi bar, the focus is on the lounge and dining room, where booths and banquettes covered in cream, mocha and green tea hues are illuminated by dramatic contemporary fixtures. Plates are meant to be shared, and a meal might begin with hamachi carpaccio, beef tataki with balsamic vinaigrette or seared albacore on crispy rice, crowned with pickled jalapeño. Deep-fried rock shrimp arrive with spicy aïoli and wasabi mayo, while yukari fries---every bit as good as the pommes frites at most local bistros---are sprinkled with shiso leaf instead of parsley. Garlic tops the rib-eye steak, while a sweet eel risotto arrives in a hot stone bowl that crisps the rice. Dessert might consist of addictive honey-soaked toast topped with ice cream or refreshing shaved ice flavored with lychee, green tea or melon. A selection of beer, wine, shochu, saké and specialty cocktails is available from the bar. Also located at Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Center, 400 S. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia, 626-445-4000.
