Tubby's Tank House Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant and décor: Founded as a humble fishing village, Thunderbolt, just five miles from downtown Savannah, lies along the Wilmington River, part of the Intercoastal Waterway. Its many docks are home to a legion of shrimping trawlers. Tubby's Tank House captures the rustic, carefree atmosphere of a shrimping community, its wooden structure housing a rambling outdoor seating area that often hosts live music and beckons in fine weather.
Food & Drinks: The "must" opener is a cup (at least) of the rich, creamy crab stew for which the place is famous. Buffalo shrimp are spot-on. For those more interested in land proteins, there are some chicken specials, a burger and a filet mignon. Vegetarians will find Caesar salad. Many plates are large enough for two. Shrimp and grits and fish and grits come with stone-ground grits; these are also offered at brunch. This is brew fare, although wines are available. We enjoyed a Tybee Blonde from Savannah's Coastal Empire Beer Co. with the buffalo shrimp, and appreciated being able to order a short pour. For dessert, go for the pecan pie. Also located in the Savannah Historic District, 115 E. River St., 912-233-0770.
