Urban Chestnut Grove Brewery & Bierhall Restaurant Review:
Along with a much-anticipated expansion of its brewing operation, this young company added a second location with a sizable indoor beer hall and full-out restaurant kitchen. German-born brewmaster Florian Kuplent and his business partner, David Wolfe, offer a couple dozen beers on tap, accompanied by a menu of homeland favorites like currywurst, pretzels, schnitzel and "Berliner" donuts as well as eclectic North American offerings --- oysters, kale salad, pork rinds, and a daily rotation of poutine. The Canadian dish of fries topped with gravy is even better with hunks of tender duck and broiled cheese curds. The Revolution Series of beers highlights modern styles like the STLIPA and the aptly named Geiles (it means awesome in German), a Belgian-style ale with local corn added to the malt. The Reverence Series pays homage to old world-style pilsners (Zwickel, Stammtisch), wheat beers (Apotheosis) and smoked ales (Holzrauch).
