THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Vignette Restaurant Review:
Owners Steven Walker and executive chef Jason Yeafoli have created a tasty respite for Union Square shoppers tucked just inside the Orchard Hotel. Gilded mirrors, banquettes adorned with fall leaves, and soft jazz in the background provide elegance. The seasonal menu, while not groundbreaking, is satisfying and nicely done. Mushroom soup arrives in a cappuccino cup and looks like the real thing until the aroma of fresh mushrooms wafts up to prove you wrong---the frothy broth is warm and earthy. Crispy-skin quail is cleverly paired with a poached quail egg atop frisée and oven-dried tomatoes. Sonoma foie gras au torchon is served alongside tart-sweet Mojave Desert raisins and Gewürztraminer sauce. Forget the other white meat---Texas wild boar chop is gamier and darker than its domestic cousin, but tender, moist and full of flavor. Stellar desserts, from velvety maple and toasted almond ice creams to warm chocolate chip-coconut cookies, are house-made. The California-focused wine list is a bit pricey. Service is relaxed but suitably responsive.
