THIS RESTAURANT HAS CHANGED NAMES Zip Fusion Restaurant Review:
Like its neighbor, pioneering R-23, this hip spot helped ease the transition of this marginal neighborhood east of Little Tokyo from warehouse district to arts district. With its abstract paintings, lacquered sushi bar and tables dressed in vibrantly colored fabrics, the candlelit dining room has a soothing but edgy vibe. The lovely courtyard patio is more laid back. You can find reasonably good sushi here, and the big sellers seem to be from the long list of rolls. Some are hybrids, like the baked scallop roll, a massive plate of saucy scallops with mushrooms and onions piled atop slices of a California roll. Other favorites include the signature alba-cado (albacore wrapped in avocado and drizzled with eel sauce, resembling a green apple), a super-size spicy tuna salad and shrimp ravioli. Even when a dish at Zip doesn't quite deliver, we have to appreciate the big portions (even the traditional nigiri sushi is generously cut) and the simple fact that its ambitious owner, Jason Ha, believes in this neighborhood. Also at 2560 Tuscany St., Corona, 951-272-2177.
