THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zipangu Restaurant Review:
Located in The Lab in Costa Mesa, this self-consciously cool, ultra-modern sushi bar has a décor that feels a bit underground, with its dark interior, recycled woods and minimalist design. Start by requesting a refreshing martini inspired by the Zodiac signs. Interestingly, this thoroughly contemporary restaurant serves up both traditional omakase-style sushi alongside an entire menu of over-the-top Asian-fusion creations and grilled robata selections. But don’t be put off. Your best bet is to order several dishes from the reasonably priced Asian tapas menu, such as the jalapeño yellowtail or the Kurobuta pork misoyaki. Try not to miss the “Oh My God!” roll, which arrives looking like something from outer space, but is tasty with its shrimp tempura, crab meat and tuna topped with a spicy aïoli. You could make a meal from the tapas or roll menu, but there’s also more Westernized entrées like rib-eye steak, roasted organic salmon and Chilean sea bass.
