THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Zoe Townhouse Restaurant Review:
A few steps down lead to the new incarnation of the short-lived Jovia, housed in a limestone mansion on a tree-lined street. Owners Stephen and Thalia Loffredo have turned this cozy space into the Upper East Side branch of Zoë, their 15-year-old success in SoHo. On the ground floor, the long and inviting bar and casual menu, including wood-oven baked pizzas, attract a well-heeled singles crowd. Up the stairs, on the parlor floor, the high-ceiling dining room, with its large mullioned windows and yellowish tint, feels just like your great aunt’s drawing room. The menu says simple Americana but it’s well executed. A signature fried calamari appetizer is as irresistible as it is on Prince Street; the salads fresh and smartly dressed. Duck two ways includes a juicy, thick magret and a moist leg confit served with Swiss chard and jasmine rice. The spice-dusted tuna steak comes out just as required, almost sushi-like. Take some time to study the hand-picked all-American wine list.
