Zooma offers quality sushi in a charming Malibu setting --- it’s nestled in a small hillside complex just south of Zuma Beach and surrounded by maple and oak trees. The light and airy dining room overlooks a Japanese garden and koi pond and is usually filled with locals who seem to know everyone in the house. We recommend starting with asparagus tempura or stuffed gyoza, followed by a salmon-skin salad with bonito flakes and daikon. There’s a respectable menu of sushi and rolls, plus entrées like chicken or beef teriyaki and grilled halibut in ginger-garlic sauce. A yakitori menu features yellowtail, Japanese eggplant and chicken with green onions, while salad options range from poke to hijiki and seaweed. Apple or banana tempura and the tempura green tea ice cream are comforting desserts. A decent wine and saké selection is also available.
