RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Looking for something different? Check out The Wurst Place, a hip gourmet sausage eatery just opened in South Lake Union. Open daily for lunch and dinner, the vibe is trendy, the decor is cool (think gnomes), and the menu includes Belgian-style fries, along with 23 beers on tap. The Wurst Place, 510 Westlake Ave., Seattle, WA 98102, 206-223-5528.

Owners of the popular Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub on Aurora Avenue in Greenlake plan to open a restaurant in Ballard in the library building formerly occupied by the elegant European restaurant, Carnegie's. Look for a sports bar vibe with a rugby focus and a good selection of local beers, imported brews, and microbrews on tap. Aussie pies, sausage rolls, and Vegemite toasties will top the menu. Watch for a spring opening. The Kangaroo & Kiwi Pub, 2026 NW Market St., Seattle, WA 98107, no phone.

Things are looking up for Belltown, which has lost a number of restaurants in the past few years. New to the nieghborhood is Mestizo Tequila Ultra Lounge & Grill which will take over the space previously occupied by Twist on First Avenue. The new restaurant expects to open in early March and will offer 200 types of tequila and a Latin/Carribean menu. Across the street, next to the popular Black Bottle, there's a sign posted for a new Irish Pub, C.S. Finnegan's. Just down the street, Black Bottle recently opened The Innkeeper, a low-key, no frills bar with good food and a friendly neighborhood vibe. Back on Fourth and Vine, a new supper club --- Henry and Oscar's --- recently opened. Owned by the same folks who run the Big Picture, the club will serve classic American cuisine in a lodge-like setting.

Spring Hill Turns Chicken and Takes On a New Name
West Seattle's trendsetting Pacific Northwest restaurant, Spring Hill, is changing its name to Ma'ono Fried Chicken & Whiskey. The switch is not as wacky as it sounds because this restaurant, owned by chef Mark Fuller and his wife Marjorie Chang Fuller, has developed a reputation for its Hawaiian-inspired chicken. As of February 8, the menu now focuses on chicken dinners and other Hawaiian dishes. The famous Spring Hill burger remains on the menu, as well as the popular brunch. Clever desserts such as popcorn ice cream will continue to delight diners. Spring Hill, 113 Blanchard St., Seattle, WA 98121, 206-728-6706.

Veggie Grill Plans to Open Several Seattle Locations
The Southern California-based vegan chain, Veggie Grill, plans to open several locations this spring in Seattle. Known for its plant-based menu, including faux-meat sandwiches and burgers, a typical menu selection also includes salads and desserts. The Northwest's first Veggie Grill recently opened in Beaverton Oregon.
