Rich Sweeney, from Season Five of Bravo's Top Chef, has opened R Gang Eatery in Hillcrest. In a nod to the original Little Rascals' Our Gang (Sweeney's childhood nickname was "Spanky"), the restaurant offers a contemporary twist on retro-American fare prepared with fresh ingredients. Dishes include minted lamb Salisbury steak, steak Diane, Indian-spiced chicken curry pot pie, sopressata and smoked gouda mac 'n cheese. Dinner Tuesday-Saturday and brunch on weekends. North Park's newest addition, URBN Coal Fired Pizza, the massive, 5,000-square-foot restaurant and lounge by the same owners of BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar in the East Village. The venue boasts the same "bare bones" industrial warehouse feel, but includes an expanded food and bar menu, as well as an emphasis on international craft beers, Italian and small production wines and artisanal spirits. The menu staple is a traditional thin-crust pie, which is coal fired and reminiscent of the famous pizzerias found in New Haven, Connecticut. Exciting news for Del Mar --- chef Jason Maitland has joined forces with savvy restaurateur Jeff Hunter and general manager Jerome Astolfi, an accomplished sommelier as well, to create Flavor, located in the Del Mar Plaza. The former Arterra chef plans to concentrate on, appropriately, the simple flavors of food. Dishes will include cast-iron-seared wild sockeye salmon with spaghetti squash ribbons, apple-celeriac slaw and jalapeno-maple glaze; braised Prime beef short ribs with whipped Yukon gold potatoes, Chino Farms baby vegetables and Maytag bleu cheese. The lounge menu will feature exciting dishes like Pacific oysters on the half shell with wasabi cocktail sauce and yuzu mignonette; and a Maine lobster roll. Suckling Pig Dinners at George’s California Modern
George’s California Modern has a new, festive gourmet option for parties of 8 to 10. Chef Trey Foshee will prepare a whole suckling pig that is presented tableside, then carved in the kitchen and served with seasonal side dishes, salads and sauces. Groups can enjoy the feast in California Modern or at the communal table in the Modern Bar. The price is $600, plus tax and gratuity. Wine pairings are available as well.
