Tucked away in Echo Park is an intimate new wine shop/wine bar, Tilda, specializing in California natural wines with a menu from chef Carrie Funk. Featured dishes include smoked trout dip with crème fraîche and dill, a picnic sandwich on ciabatta, salade Niçoise, and mixed charcuterie. Santa Monica welcomes a new gourmet “pizza pub” named Surfer Rose, from the team behind The Cliffdiver in Malibu. Look for thin-crust signature pies topped with kale, pesto and fresh mozzarella; al pastor pork with pineapple and cilantro; and spicy meatball with pickled jalapeños and feta. There’s also a fresh lobster roll, shrimp tacos, and fish and chips to keep feeling the beachy wave. A tiki-leaning cocktail menu features the refreshing “Pretty in Pink” made with Aviation Gin, rosemary syrup, grapefruit and Prosecco, plus there are local craft beers on tap and select wines from California and France. In Los Feliz at the edge of Thai Town is Salaya, an authentic, all-vegan Thai restaurant that’s women owned. Look for creative dishes like deep-fried corn cakes with sweet-and-sour cucumber sauce, seaweed quinoa balls, and snap pea salad with black chili tamarind sauce. Meatless classics include pad Thai, eggplant larb, spicy garlic noodles, panang curry, and pad prik khing. Entrées come with a choice of tofu, vegan chicken, vegan pepper steak or mixed vegetables. Many New Yorkers bemoan the dearth of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in LA, but Jose Miura has helped remedy the situation by opening his new eatery The Ricans Food in the Arts District’s Smorgasburg food market on Sundays. His specialty is mofongo, a savory mélange of mashed green plantain, garlic, oil and spices, served hot with a variety of proteins ranging from pork carne frita, guava chicken, steak or jackfruit guisado. Restaurateur David Slay (SLAY Steak + Fish House, il Garage Ristorante) has opened a swank new Manhattan Beach restaurant, Slay Italian Kitchen. He enlisted chef Don Dickman (All’Acqua) to rev up a rustic Italian menu featuring stone-fired pizza, pastas, roasts and vegetables from Slay’s own vineyard; Slay’s Santa Barbara wines will also be on offer. Look for dishes like burrata with homemade kumquat and white balsamic jam; bucatini with wild boar ragù; and lamb chops scottadito with wilted greens and pistachio mint pesto. Pizza dough is hand-formed and fermented for at least 48 hours, with specialty pies including the Squash Blossom & Broccoli di Ciccio with roasted onion crema and Fontina cheese.
