Openings

Sel et Gras has opened on the corner of Seventh Avenue and W. 10th Street, where a pizza-by-the-slice place previously existed. The restaurant serves Gallic-flavored small plates. Sel et Gras, 131 Seventh Ave. S., New York, NY 10014, 646-558-5468.
 
SoHo wine bar Maslow 6 has opened on West Broadway. Bouley alum Nickolas Kipper is manning the stoves and serving up dishes like meatball Wellington, pork cheeks, and chicken and waffles (made with chicken liver). Chef Andrew Carmellini Andrew Carmellini (The Dutch, Locanda Verde) will open a restaurant inside the Public Theater called The Library. Located in the lobby, the new venue will serve American fare with cocktails and craft beer and stay open until 2 a.m. The Library, 425 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10003, no phone available.
 
A less casual, sit-down version of popular Xi'an Famous Foods, Biang! serves up adventurous Chinese fare (lamb eyeballs, anyone?) in Flushing, Queens. Biang!, 41-10 Main St., Flushing, NY 11355, 347-294-0022.
 
An outpost of San Francisco's acclaimed Mission Chinese Food has set up shop on New York's Lower East Side. Similar to the original Mission Chinese Food, 75 cents will be donated to charity for every entrée ordered. The menu will be comparable to that of the San Francisco restaurant, with plenty of hearty Chinese fare on offer. Mission Chinese Food, 154 Orchard St., New York, NY 10002, phone not available.
 
The brick-and-mortar location of the popular Kimchi Taco truck, Prospect Height's Kimchi Grill serves up Korean-inspired Mexican fare like tacos and quesadillas. Kimchi Grill, 766 Washington Ave., New York, NY 11238, 718-360-1839.
 
Alums of The Standard Grill and Franny's have come together to open Yunnan Kitchen, a chic Chinese restaurant on the Lower East Side. Yunnan Kitchen, 79 Clinton St., New York, NY 10002, 212-253-2527.
 


News Bytes
New York's James Beard Foundation Award Winners
New York was well represented in the winner's circle at this year's James Beard Foundation Awards. Eleven Madison Park's chef Daniel Humm won the top award for Outstanding Chef, while Momofuku Bakery & Milk Bar's Christina Tosi took home honors for Rising Chef. In the Best Chef NYC category, Gramercy Tavern's chef Michael Anthony was the big winner. Other Big Apple restaurants and individuals that received awards included Terroir's Paul Grieco for Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional, PDT for Outstanding Bar Program, and La Grenouille for Outstanding Service.
 
Big Bass Dinner at Oceana
Oceana, the Midtown seafood restaurant, is now serving a Big Bass Dinner (that's their term). For $75 per person, diners get --- you guessed it --- a big bass stuffed with mushrooms, olives and spinach. Several sides, starters and dessert round out the meal. Coming to Nueva York
Famed DC-based Spanish chef José Andrés is coming to New York. He's not setting up a new restaurant (yet) but he'll be the dean of Spanish Studies at The International Culinary Center.
 

Chef Shuffle

Closings

The East Village burger joint Zaitzeff has shut down for good. Zaitzeff, 18 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009, no phone.

Atelier de Joël Robuchon in New York closed on June 30th On June 30, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, located in the Four Seasons Hotel New York, shut down for good. There is no word yet on what will happen to the space. There are also outposts of the restaurant in Paris, London, Hong Kong and Las Vegas. East Village pan-Asian eatery Friend House has shut down. Friend House, 99 Third Ave., New York, NY 10003, no phone.

The Gramercy Park location of Michael 'Bao' Huynh's Mikey's Burger (Third Ave. & E. 20th St.) has shut down. The Lower East Side location, though, is still firing on all burners. Mikey's Burger, 134 Ludlow St., New York, NY 10002, 212-979-9211.
 
After just over a year in business, Scottish gastropub Mary Queen of Scots has shut down. The space on Allen and Delancey Streets on the Lower East Side is being called "doomed," as it's had many restaurant tenants over the years.
