Openings

Bierocracy is a Central European-style beer hall in the heart of Long Island City. The large room boasts long wooden communal tables and an island bar in the center. The beers on tap give a heavy nod to those of the Czech Republic or Czech-style lagers. The menu, naturally, is meant to pair well with the beer: pretzels, pork belly and schnitzel. Giulio Adriani, the erstwhile pizzaiolo at Olio Pizza e Piu and Forcella, has a new pizzeria on the Upper East Side. Service Station, located in a former gas station, serves up Neapolitan-style pies, including the fried variety, the montanara pizza. Arepa Factory in the East Village serves up street food from Venezuela such as four different types of arepas, cachapas and various desserts. Arepa Factory, 147 Ave. A, New York, NY 10009, 646-490-6828.
 
Dominique Bistro is a new Gallic eatery in Greenwich Village. The restaurant serves up classic French staples like duck confit, beef Bourguignon and ratatouille. Dominique Bistro, 14 Christopher St., New York, NY 10014, 646-756-4145.
 


News Bytes
Alex Raij Expands her Empire
Chef Alex Raij, the chef from Minneapolis who has made a name for herself with an array of Spanish restaurants in New York City, is adding another eatery to her empire. She'll be firing up the burners on a new Spanish spot in the old Ted & Honey space in Brooklyn's Cobble Hill, just down the street from her restaurant, La Vara. Details are scant so stay tuned.
 
Downtown Eataly
The second Big Apple location of Eataly now has a projected opening date. The downtown outpost, at 4 World Trade Center, is scheduled to debut on April 14, 2016. Eataly, 4 World Trade Center, New York, NY 10006, no phone.
 
The Return of the Thanksgiving Croissant
We must be on the eve of Thanksgiving. How do we know? Because Christina Tosi, the mastermind behind Momofuku Milk Bar, has reintroduced the Thanksgiving croissant: a flaky pastry crammed with cranberry sauce and gravy. Chef Shuffle
Chef Andrew D'Ambrosi has departed from the new East Village vegan restaurant, Avant Garden. He was offered a job in France, and accepted it. There's no word yet on his replacement. Avant Garden, 130 E. 7th St., New York, NY 10009, 646-922-7948.
 
Pastry chef Tracy Obolsky is departing from North End Grill. Her replacement has not been named. North End Grill, 104 N. End Ave., New York, NY 10282, 646-747-1600.
 
Makoto Yoshizawa has been named the new chef of East Village spot Sushi Dojo. He replaced David Bouhadana. Sushi Dojo, 110 First Ave., New York, NY 10009, 646-692-9398.
 
Jose Paulo Cortes, formerly a baker, is now the executive chef of Bustan, the Mediterranean restaurant on the Upper West Side. Bustan, 487 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY 10024, 212-595-5050.
 
Mads Refslund, the chef at Acme in NoHo, will leave the restaurant at the end of the year to write a cookbook and pursue other projects. Acme, 9 Great Jones St., New York, NY 10012, 212-203-2121.
 


Closings

Prova, the Neapolitan pizza spot in Chelsea, has shut down. The restaurant was a collaboration between Donatella Arpaia and the people from Kesté Pizza & Vino and Ribalta. The place vows to reopen at another location, but there’s no clue as to where or when. Prova, 184 Eighth Ave., New York, NY 10011, no phone.
 
Spasso, the Italian restaurant in the West Village that first opened in 2011, has shut down permanently. Spasso, 551 Hudson St., New York, NY 10014, no phone.
 
West Village restaurant and gastropub Chapter One has shut down. Chapter One, 33 Greenwich Ave., New York, NY 10014, no phone.
 
After five years of pouring wine and serving tapas, the East Village wine bar, The Barrel, has shut down. In its place will be a Japanese restaurant. The Barrel, 10 Stuyvesant St., New York, NY 10003, no phone.
 
Chef Harold Dieterle has announced that he'll close his remaining two restaurants in New York City, both located in Greenwich Village.
